SAN REMO & PHILLIP ISLAND
(Excursion)
(D. Hustler)
Leaving Traralgon at 9.30 am on Sunday, 25th October, we went through Leongatha down the Bass Highway to Anderson where we met our guide, Cherry McPhee, and members from the Yarram Historical Society, and looked out over the bay to Bass Strait.
From the lookout in San Remo we could see across to Cape Woolamai which Bass mentioned in his narrative on Western Port bay - it is the highest point on Phillip Island.
From San Remo we crossed over on the new bridge to Phillip Island - Churchill Island could be seen off shore, with French Island in the distance. We went on past Swan Bay to Rhyll and Observation Hill, then to Cowes (which was busy as only a seaside resort can be !).
As guests of the Phillip Island & District Historical Society, we enjoyed a lovely lunch provided by the members and then spent a very interest- ing time browsing through the Society's museum with a very good collection of photographic displays and artefacts.
On board our coach again, we drove down to Grossard Point where our photographers took photos of historic plaques - an earlier lot had been taken at the San Remo Back Beach. Next, we approached the Nobbies and the Seal Rocks Centre, which also had many visitors.
On the return journey to San Remo we passed several old chicory kilns, the Wool Centre, the Grand Prix circuit and the Dairy Centre.
We thanked our guide for a most informative day. And to top it all, the weather was absolutely splendid.
